The Greenwood Street Pharmacy is an example of a successful design/build project on a modest budget. We were engaged by Scott Construction to produce a small pharmacy/dispensary on a site adjacent to a new medical centre in Motueka.
Having been a service station forecourt in its previous life, the site came with a specific set of problems. Before building could start the whole area was excavated and slotted pipes were run under a polypropylene capping sheet to control the release of residual ground gases. We were also asked to ‘re-use’ some precast concrete panels that the owner had inherited with the site.
Street presence was important and the resulting 90m² building presents a bold new shopfront to Greenwood Street incorporating a covered outdoor seating area which doubles as a security bollard. The twisted roof plane provides cover to the entries off the street and the carpark. The angled yellow wall identifies the main entry and extends through the building, separating public areas from private.
Good communication and productive meetings with the client and builder resulted in careful internal planning allowing us to fit a lot into a small space. The sloping ceiling over the public area affords a sensation of spaciousness that is surprising, given the small external appearance of the building.
